Garry Rector: Wood Carving Classes

Cost: Carving, Detailing and Painting instruction including eyes and pattern $225.00
Extra Blank and set of eyes - $18.00

Supplies need: Knife, Wood Burner, pencil, eraser, ruler, scissors, callipers or dividers, sandpaper and paint brushes

Information:

  • No power in class, instruction will be done with knives
  • Anatomy, feather layout, and techniques will be discussed and shown
  • Full detailing and painting will be done on the carving
  • Instruction on making feet and mounting finished carving to a base will be discussed, giving each person the option on how he/she will complete the piece.

Wood Spirit Carving Class Information

 Class description:
This is a beginners carving weekend but carvers of intermediate level are also welcome.  There will be 15 hours instruction in carving techniques for a male face while carving a Wood Spirit face in Cottonwood Bark.   Basic hand tools will be made available for 6 beginning students.  The class maximum is 10 students.  Intermediate carvers must bring their own tools.  Rotary tools are not allowed as too much dust is produced.

I can be contacted through my web site or by phone at 699-2524.  Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the instruction or tools.  I would appreciate being in contact, by email or phone, with each participant prior to the class weekend in order to discuss student experience.

Provided:

- 15 hours of instruction.  Eight hours on Saturday (8:30 am to 5 pm) and seven hours on Sunday (8:30 m to 4 pm)
- handouts containing basic carving instructions and related resources and information
- all basic hand tools required made available for use to 6 beginner students
- free basic thumb protection for each student.
- use of a safety carving glove and also gloves made available for sale at $8 each 

- use of a safety non slip mat and also mats made available for sale for $5 each

Additional cost to the workshop:
- appropriate cottonwood bark at an average cost of  $15 per piece  Each student will select their own piece of wood.

You are invited to bring a bag lunch and your own beverage each day.  We will take 1/2 hour for lunch and body breaks will be scheduled according to the needs of the class.

21ST ANNUAL REFLECTIONS OF NATURE

WILDLIFE ART COMPETITION, SHOW AND SALE

Oct 21-23, 2011 —Saskatoon, SK—Saskatoon Prairieland Park, 503 Ruth St.

Presented by the Saskatchewan Wildlife Art Association Inc.  Western Canada’s largest wildlife art show. Bird, fish, and animal carving, wildlife sculptures, painting, drawing, photography, and a junior art competition.

Commercial exhibits, workshops, demonstrations, auctions; $8,500 in cash and purchase awards.  Entry Registration Oct 20, noon to 8 p.m.

Fri. 7:30 p.m. is our wine & cheese gala and auction ($15 advance tickets only).  Sat. 6:00 pm banquet ($25 advance tickets only) followed by feature artist presentation with Garfield MacGillivray from Quill Lake, Sask
